Youth Involvement

Support for Our Youth

Did you know The Royal Canadian Legion is a major supporter of youth programs across Canada? We work with schools and youth organizations to keep the memories of our Fallen Veterans alive. We also support programs such as Cadets, Scouts, Guides, and youth sports to help build confidence, citizenship, and future leaders.

Youth Education

The Royal Canadian Legion is dedicated to keeping the tradition of Remembrance strong for younger generations. We promote learning about Veterans and Remembrance through local and national initiatives.

We support local schools by:

  • Encouraging Remembrance Day ceremonies
  • Providing poppies and educational materials
  • Offering speakers to share Veterans’ stories and the meaning of Remembrance

Other youth-focused initiatives include:

  • Commemorative ceremonies for youth
  • Support for Cadets, Scouts, and Guides
  • Partnerships with Cadets for the Poppy Campaign
  • Encouraging youth participation in Remembrance ceremonies
  • Youth scholarships and bursary programs

National Youth Remembrance Contests

Take part in the annual National Youth Remembrance Contests. The Legion National Foundation—together with The Royal Canadian Legion and schools—invites Canadian youth to honour Veterans through art, writing, and video.

National winners receive cash prizes. First Place Senior winners earn a trip to Ottawa to represent Canadian youth at the National Remembrance Day Ceremony.

For details and entry information, visit RemembranceContests.ca.

Poster, Literary, and Video Contests

These contests include multiple levels of competition:

  • Poster and literary entries begin at the local level and advance to the provincial level
  • Video entries begin at the provincial level
  • Provincial finalists then compete at the national level

Track & Field

The Track and Field program of Ontario Command is unique—it is the only program of its kind in the province that offers both a summer and winter meet for girls and boys aged 17 and under. Athletes can compete at two additional levels (Zone and District), and those who qualify can advance to the provincial level.

Support for Our Seniors

In addition to our commitment to youth, we also support our seniors. The Legion stays connected with members who are experiencing—or recovering from—a medical event, and we also acknowledge the passing of a Legion member or a member of their family.

We provide this support by:

  • Sending cards of support
  • Attending Celebrations of Life

We want our members to know they are being thought of and are not forgotten. Everyone faces challenges, and this is one way we can stay connected.

We also respect your privacy during these times. To help us do that, we ask Legion members to be our “eyes and ears” and let us know when a fellow member may appreciate a supportive word, acknowledgement, or visit.

Branch members are invited to visit Veterans who are hospitalized or sick at home. Comradeship is central to the Legion—and to this Branch.
