A Life and Service Remembered
Albert Mainprize was born in Trout Creek, Ontario, in 1897 and came of age during the final years of the First World War. In May 1918, he enlisted for service and joined the Canadian Engineers, a branch whose work supported the army through construction, transport, and essential military infrastructure.
His service took him to England, where he trained before being sent to Seaford. Though his time overseas came late in the war, he was part of the broad effort that kept Canada’s military forces organized and supported during a demanding period of service abroad. At this time, his service records are not publicly available, so the exact details of his wartime movements have not yet been confirmed.
After returning home and receiving his discharge in 1919, Mainprize built a life rooted in family, farming, and community. He married Violet Stapleton in 1926, and together they raised three children. He also remained connected to remembrance through St. Marys Legion Branch 236, reflecting a continuing bond with the community and with fellow veterans.
Albert Mainprize died on August 27, 1977, and was laid to rest in St. Marys Cemetery. He is remembered through the St. Marys Legion banner program and through the effort to preserve the stories of local servicemen.
