A Life and Service Remembered

Thomas Malcolm Patterson was only 17 years old when he left for Toronto in 1941 and joined the Royal Canadian Navy. Though underage, he was accepted into service and sent west to Esquimalt, British Columbia for training before being posted to Halifax.

Known as Tom, he served as a cook, an essential role aboard ship where long watches, cold weather, danger, and distance from home made daily meals an important part of morale and routine. His naval service took him from Canadian waters to Scotland, where he served with HMCS Columbia and was also stationed at HMCS Niobe.

In 1944, while serving aboard HMCS St. Boniface, Tom met Ruth Bernice Bush in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Their meeting became part of the family story, and after the war he brought Ruth home to St. Marys to meet his family. They would share 61 years of marriage.

Tom was proud of his naval service and the friendships he made, while also remembering the friends who did not return. He passed away in St. Marys on March 8, 2008, and is remembered through his family, his community, and the St. Marys Legion Veterans Banner Program.
