A Life and Service Remembered

Maxwell Gourlay Armstrong was a young St. Marys serviceman who served overseas during the Second World War. At this time, we have not located a public service summary for Maxwell so are unable to confirm his wartime movements

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Armstrong, who lived on Mitchell Road in St. Marys. Maxwell married Gloria Bondy, another member of the St. Marys community. While Maxwell was overseas, Gloria lived with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bondy, in town.

A surviving newspaper clipping records one of the difficult messages that reached families at home during the war. Maxwell had been slightly wounded while serving in Belgium, and word of his injury was received by Gloria.

The brief notice does not record the circumstances of his wound or identify the particular battle in which it occurred. It does, however, preserve a very personal glimpse of wartime St. Marys. While Maxwell was serving overseas, his wife and both families were at home waiting for news.

Maxwell survived the war. The family history record provided for him identifies his life as spanning 1925 to 1988. His wartime service and the concern felt for him at home remain part of the story of St. Marys during the Second World War.
