Story

Some Veterans leave behind long paper trails: units, postings, newspaper write-ups, medals you can trace by serial number. Others leave something quieter, a name carried forward mostly by the people who remember it.

Private Maxwell Gourlay Armstrong is honored in St. Marys through Branch 236’s Veteran Banner Program, his banner was placed within the community each year. That matters, because it brings remembrance out into everyday life. It means his service is not tucked away in a book on a shelf or limited to one day in November. His name is seen in passing, again and again, by neighbors who may never have met him, but who benefit from what his generation was willing to do.

This page is part of a larger effort for the Branch’s 100th anniversary: to make sure each Veteran is remembered as a person, not just a line in a list. For Maxwell Armstrong, we are still working to confirm the details of his uniform, his unit, and where he served. Until we have those records in hand, we will do the most important part: keep his name present in the community, and keep looking until the story is complete.
