A Life and Service Remembered

Vincent F. Grose was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Grose of St. Marys. His connection with military life began even before the Second World War, when he served with the St. Marys Machine Gun Company. When war came in September 1939, Vincent was among the first young men from St. Marys to enlist in the Perths. What followed was more than five years in the Armed Services and a long journey far from home.

Vincent served throughout the Italian Campaign and later continued his service in Belgium and Holland. By the time he finally returned to Canada, he had spent years living the demanding outdoor life of a soldier.

A local newspaper marked his homecoming after he arrived aboard the New Amsterdam. The brief account noted that Vincent looked well, although noticeably weathered by his years of army life. After more than five years away, another St. Marys serviceman had finally come home.

His service is remembered today through the St. Marys Legion Veterans Banner Program.
