A Life and Service Remembered

Joseph Taylor’s name is carved into the St. Marys Cenotaph, which tells us one sure thing: someone in our community believed he belonged among the local men who went overseas and never came home. Names we’re placed on the cenotaph by those in mourning, the lost soldiers family and friends so sometimes this makes it hard to place the soldiers history in the community.

The hard part is proving which Joseph Taylor that was.

We found two different Canadian Expeditionary Force attestation papers that are strong candidates and match the name but neither one, on its own, gives us the clear St. Marys connection we would normally rely on. That is why he was left out of earlier local compilations.

Until we can tie him firmly to a family, workplace, address, church, or other local thread in St. Marys, we are treating this as a possible match, not a final answer.

If you are a descendant of the Taylor family from St. Marys or have letters, photographs, or family stories that connect a Joseph Taylor to the town, we would be grateful to hear from you so we can honor the right man with confidence.
