A Life and Service Remembered
Lorne E. McCauley was born in Brussels, Ontario in 1920 and enlisted in the Canadian Army in December 1940. He served with the Three Rivers Regiment, an armoured unit that would become part of the 1st Canadian Armoured Brigade during the Second World War.
His service took him overseas and into the Italian Campaign, where Canadian forces faced some of the most difficult fighting conditions of the war. During the advance through Italy, the regiment took part in operations including the fighting around Ortona in December 1943, one of the most intense urban battles faced by Canadian troops.
During this period, McCauley was serving with regimental elements when he was seriously injured after the vehicle he was in struck a German anti tank mine. He sustained significant facial injuries that resulted in the loss of an eye.
At this time, his service records are not publicly available, so the exact details of his wartime movements have not yet been confirmed.

After recovering from his injuries, McCauley returned to Canada and married Eloyce Davidson in 1945. They settled in St. Marys, where he worked at the Maxwell plant before moving into a long career with the Perth County School Board. He was a familiar and well respected presence in local schools, working for many years as a custodian at St. Marys District Collegiate and St. Marys Central School. Volunteering his spare time with the local Scouts and the Legion.
Throughout his life, McCauley showed the same determination that carried him through the war. He overcame further health challenges later in life, including major surgery, and remained active in his community and family.
Sergeant Lorne E. McCauley passed away in 1995. He and his wife raised five children, and his legacy continues through his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. His service and life are remembered through the St. Marys Legion banner program.
