A Life and Service Remembered

John Moore’s attestation papers are plain and practical: a 30 year old labourer, single, signing up in St. Marys in April 1916 and naming his sister, Mary, as his next of kin in London. There is something quietly human in that choice. When everything else was uncertain, he put a name down that meant home.

His service was short, and it unfolded entirely in Stratford. The battalion was training, building itself up, and preparing for what would come next. His file records trouble during that brief month, including absences without leave and punishment connected to drunkenness. It is a reminder that the men behind the uniforms were not poster ideals. They were people with edges and burdens, trying to hold themselves together while the world asked them to become soldiers.

He never made it overseas. He died rather suddenly of acute gastritis, in Stratford on 9 May 1916, far from the front, and his loss was felt at home just the same.

He is commemorated locally on St. Marys Cenotaph and in church records in St. Marys, alongside others whose names remained in the community long after their lives ended.
