A Life and Service Remembered
Edgar T. Jenkins was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, in 1933 and enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1951. His military career began with the Royal Canadian Artillery, and for much of his time in uniform he served in that branch, building the skills and discipline that came with army life during the post-war era.
His service took him to postings across Canada, including Goose Bay, Gagetown, Shilo, Summerside, Picton, and CFB Portage. These moves reflect the kind of steady and adaptable service required of many career soldiers, whose lives were shaped by repeated transfers and new responsibilities in different parts of the country.
Toward the end of his military career, Jenkins re-mustered as a military firefighter, taking on a different but equally important role in support of the Canadian Armed Forces. His willingness to adapt and continue serving in a new capacity speaks to the breadth of his contribution over more than three decades in uniform.
Edgar Jenkins was discharged on June 5, 1983, after 32 years of service. His career stands as a reminder that military service is not only defined by wartime duty, but also by the long years of commitment, readiness, and support that sustain Canada’s armed forces in peace and in changing times.
He left a legacy within his family, as both his son, Tom Jenkins and grandson, Gordon Jenkins followed in his footsteps and served after him. That continuation across generations reflects the lasting impact of his example and the importance of his military career.
