A Life and Service Remembered

Valentine Marziali, known to family and friends as Volley, was born and raised in St. Marys. He was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Marziali and attended school in the community before entering military service during the Second World War.

Volley was not the only member of the family in uniform. A wartime newspaper article proudly reported that three Marziali brothers were serving with Canada’s armed forces at the same time.

The eldest, Louis, was a corporal with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and was serving in Labrador. Lawrence (Lorne) served with the Royal Canadian Air Force as an aero-mechanic. Volley followed his brothers into service with the Canadian Army.

At the time the family was featured in the newspaper, Private Marziali was stationed at Camp Borden, Ontario. The photograph accompanying the article shows the three brothers together in print, each wearing the uniform of his respective branch of service.

For the Marziali family, the war meant having three sons in uniform at once. Their newspaper feature preserves not only Volley’s individual service, but also the remarkable contribution made by one St. Marys family during the Second World War.

Valentine “Volley” Marziali is remembered today through the St. Marys Legion Veterans Banner Program.
