A Life and Service Remembered

Bruce Oliver was one of four brothers from the Oliver family of Avonbank who answered the call to service during the Second World War. While his brothers served in different parts of the Canadian military, Bruce chose the Royal Canadian Air Force. He enlisted in November 1943 and trained as an air gunner, one of the most demanding aircrew trades of the war. His training eventually took him to Mont-Joli, Quebec, home of No. 9 Bombing and Gunnery School under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Bruce graduated in December 1944.

He was just nineteen years old.

A local newspaper photograph places Bruce among the men of D Company as they prepared to leave for camp, a reminder that his military story was closely tied to the service tradition of the St. Marys and Perth County community.

At this time, we have not located a public service summary for Bruce that confirms any specific dates of service. Back home, Bruce was one of four Oliver brothers whose wartime service was important enough to be recorded together in the local press. Their photograph preserves something military records sometimes cannot: a family’s experience of having four sons serving their country at the same time.  Each following a different path. Hugh was in England, John was in Italy, and Grant was involved with the local Perth Regiment after an injury. He continues to be honored by his family through the local legion banner program as Chief Warrant Officer Bruce Oliver, reflecting a military career that extended beyond the young airman pictured during the war.
