A Life and Service Remembered

Before the war, John Oliver worked on the family farm at Avonbank. In January 1942 he left that familiar life behind and enlisted in the Canadian Ordnance Corps.

As Canada’s wartime army became increasingly mechanized, maintaining its vehicles, weapons and equipment became an enormous undertaking. In 1944, the Corps of Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers was established from technical and maintenance elements that had previously belonged to several army corps, including the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps.

His service took him to Italy. Canadian forces in Italy depended heavily on maintenance and recovery personnel to keep vehicles, weapons and other equipment functioning as the army advanced through difficult terrain and hard-fought positions.

At this time, we have not located a public service summary for John that confirms any specific dates of service. Back home, John was one of four Oliver brothers whose wartime service was important enough to be recorded together in the local press. Their photograph preserves something military records sometimes cannot: a family’s experience of having four sons serving their country at the same time.  Each following a different path. Hugh was in England, Bruce was training with the RCAF, Grant was involved with the local Perth Regiment after an injury, and Hugh had crossed the Atlantic to England. He continues to be honored by his family through the local legion banner program.
